Polish security official Sławomir Cenckiewicz has raised alarms over Russia's potential use of cryptocurrencies to finance espionage activities within the European Union. The head of Poland's national security apparatus told the Financial Times that Moscow likely employed digital assets to bankroll drone incursions, sabotage, and other covert operations aimed at destabilizing the region.

The disclosure follows the Bank of Russia's recent decision to permit select commercial banks to participate in crypto markets. Cenckiewicz cited a 2023 case where Polish authorities dismantled a GRU-linked spy network largely funded through cryptocurrency transactions. Similar financing methods are now suspected in ongoing operations.

Poland is advancing legislative measures to curb Russia's crypto capabilities as multiple individuals face charges for conducting espionage and sabotage on Moscow's behalf. The development underscores growing concerns about state actors exploiting decentralized finance for geopolitical maneuvering.
